PROTEIN- The Building Blocks of the Body

The protein you eat becomes the building blocks of the body. That is why it is so important to feed yourself properly. Intense muscular activity causes the body to react by sending signals that it is under stress. You will want to have enough protien in your system so that it can rebuild.

It is also important that you have a high Carbohydrate diet for energy for athletes who engage in periods of hard, intense training. For now I will be talking about proteins.

When you train hard the proteins act like an army and provide energy for muscular contraction, recovery, and building. The body reacts by building stronger tissue that was used by training.

Think of protein like a bundle of bricks (they are actually a chain of something called amino acids). They have several different "bricks" that do different things. Some are for growth, some are for repair, ect. The exercise process uses energy from two things, the bricks (amino acids) of the protein bundle and glucose from the carbohydrate intake (which I will talk about at a later date). Some of the amino acids are maufactured by the body. There are 9 which cannot be made and they are called ESSENTIAL amino acids. We get them from what we eat. Intense workouts cause a supression of protein synthesis (building), and tissue destruction. This means it is important to have enough bricks (amino acids) on board. The exercise causes exhaustion of the muscles, so the body destroys them and replaces them with bigger and stronger muscles. You have a window of opportunity after an intense work out (approximately 1 hr) to increase growth with a good protein source. This is when a protein supplement will assist with recovery. WHEY protein is best. It is usually assimilated into the body within a couple of hrs. Supplements that are casein based cause a bloated feeling, nausea and gas for many hrs. They also decrease your appetite for solid foods.

One important element I must mention is the need to keep your body hydrated. When you take high amounts of protein it causes the body to become acidic so hydration is crucial. Water helps transport nutrients and flush waste products from the body. An average adult body is usually made up of 70% water (about 12 gallons). Lean muscle contains more water than fat tissue. Sweating depletes that fluid. Be sure to sip water as you exercise. On the average we need about 1200 ml per day, but with exercise our requirements increase by 5 or 6 times that amount. It is the mechanism by which the body cools itself. Normally we lose about 350 ml through the skin, but an intense workout will increase that significantly.

In conclusion the body needs protein for building. It is also important to have enough carbohydrates and to hydrate the body for proper fuction.

Eating For The Peak Athlete

Generally speaking being an athlete requires a balance of timing and planning. It takes approximately 3 1/2 hrs. to digest what you have eaten. By then, it will be time to eat again. This depends heavily on what you will be doing. Several small meals per day allows the body to use it's fuel more efficiently. Eating large meals encourages the body to store the extra calories as fat. If you do not eat frequently your body recognizes a deficit of calories and will "catabolize" (eat) it's lean tissue. In short to prevent fat and loss of muscle several meals a day should be eaten. Approximately every 3-4 hrs while awake (about 5 meals) per day.

Here is a simple way to decide how many calories you need at each meal:
If you want to GAIN muscle mass ADD 100 calories to each meal. If you want to LOSE weight (fat) reduce calories by 100. If you will be working out within the next three hours take 100 calories from other remaining meals and add them to your pre-workout meal. If you will be sitting quietly or napping over the next three hours reduce you meal to no more than 300-400 calories.

The average person is usually protein starved most of the day. It is the most important part of your diet. You must spread out your protein during your 5 meals per day. You will typically need about 1 gram of protein for every kilogram (2.2 lbs) of body weight. That would be about 15%. You will want to keep your fat intake low. Carbohydrates are your source of energy. You will want what they call complex carbs. They cause a gradual rise in your blood sugar. Simple carbs cause a rapid rise and then FALL of your blood sugar. You can easily purchase a book that tells you the caloric value of foods and it will be important to know the glycemic index of foods. You will want to keep your preworkout meal carbs on the lower glycemic end...ideally under 50%. Fruits (except bananas and raisins) and beans are very good choices. A good reference source is a diabetic cookbook with the glycemic indexes listed. Below is a very brief chart for reference. The higher the percentage the higher the sugar content.

80-90 %
carrots
parsnips
potatoes (instant)
honey
Corn flakes

70-79%
bread (whole wheat)
rice (white)
potato

60-69%

milk (skim)
milk (whole)
yogurt

20-29%
lentils
Kidney beans

10-19%
soy beans

You will want your proteins to be lean meats such as chicken, turkey, and fish.
Egg whites are also an excellent source of protein. Remember, proteins are very important. The word itself is derived from Greek meaning "of prime importance".

Steroid Use Plagues The MMA

Steroid Use Plagues The MMA

by Catherine Winn

Since the beginning of time when competitions became sports its members have been looking for the "edge" to win. Although there are many avenues here, such as training techniques, improved conditioning and cardio, diet and supplementation, it all boils down to the fact that drugs are heavily used. From 2001 to the present there are 31 reported cases of steroid use. This includes Strikeforce, EliteXC, Affliction, WEC, Femme Fatale Fighting, and the UFC. Some of these fighters are well known, others are not.

All steroids help with recovery. They are also used for building lean muscle mass. Many
of these steroids are taken together for an optimum effect. This is called stacking, which is something that you usually associate with bodybuilding or physique contests for a lean, muscularlook. Some steroids increase collagen production. Others simply increase strength. To simplify, not everyone who uses steroids looks like "the Hulk". Lance Armstrong (a well known cyclist) used steroids. He had a very lean body. Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees baseball team used steroids. There is also a down side to using these drugs. Side effects include fits of rage, violent behaviors, depression, acne, male pattern baldness, high blood pressure, arteriosclerotic heart disease, high cholesterol (LDL), gynecomastia (men develop breasts), decreased testosterone, decreased libido, and decreased testicular size to name a few things. Steroids effect several organs such as the liver, which breaks down the drug and the heart.

Josh Barnett first was tested positive for steroids in 2001. He was found with 2 different steroids in his system, but the Nevada State Athletic Commission let him off and didn't charge him. It did however, start the ball rolling for random drug testing of MMA events. He is a repeat offender. His second offense was 4/22/02 after UFC 36. He tested positive for boldenone (for building lean body mass), nandrolone (increased collagen speeds recovery) and fluoxymesterone (for strength gain). He lost his UFC heavyweight title and was suspended for 6 months by NSAC. His third offense happened just this year 7/21/09 just 11 days prior to his fight against Fedor Emilianenko in Affliction: Trilogy. He tested positive for drostanolone (for getting that lean look of no body fat). He caused the collapse of Affliction and will never be licensed to fight again in the United States.

Tim Silvia tested positive 10/7/03 after UFC 44 for stanozolol, other wise known as winstrol (for muscle growth and lean body look). He voluntarily vacated his heavyweight title, was fined $10,000 and was suspended for 6 months by NSAC.

Kimo Leopoldo at UFC 48 on 8/16/04 was found positive for stanozolol (for muscle growth and lean body look). He was fined $5,000 and given a 6 month suspension by the NSAC. He also is a repeat offender. On 7/20/06 he was pulled from a match against Bas Rutten at WFA King Of The Streets. This time he received no punishment.

Nate Marquart on 8/15/05 was positive for nandrolone (for recovery) at Ultimate Fight Night1. He had no fine but was suspended. The suspension was lifted when 2 follow up tests turned out to be negative. He blamed a supplement he was taking from MaxMuscle.

Vitor Belfort on 10/26/06 tested positive for 4-hydroxytestosterone (for building muscle mass). This was at Pride 32. He was fined $10,000 and was suspended for 9 months by the NSAC. He also blamed a supplement he had been taking called Max Tribo Stak from MaxMuscle. This supplement becomes a steroid when it is metabolized by the body.
Pawel Nastula tested positive at Pride 32 10/26/06 for nandrolone (for recovery). He was fined $6,500 and suspended for 9 months by the NSAC.

Stephan Bonnar at UFC 62 8/26/06 tested positive for boldenone (for bulking up, lean muscle mass building and cutting cycles). He claimed he was desperate because of an elbow injury. He was fined $5,000 and suspended for 9 months by the NSAC.

Kit Cope on 1/25/07 was tested positive for boldenone (for bulking up, lean muscle mass building and cutting cycles). This WEC 25 fighter was fined $1,167. The NSAC suspended him for 9 months.

Johnnie Morton tested positive for increased testosterone on 6/13/07 at an event called Dynamite USA. He was fined $2,500 with an indefinite suspension from the California State Athletic Commission. His purse of $100,00 was also held.

Royce Gracie during Dynamite USA on 6/14/07 tested positive for naldrolone (for speeding recovery). He was fined $2,500 by the CSAC and was suspended for one year.

Jorge Ortiz on 6/26/07 tested positive at Total Combat 21 for naldrolone (for recovery). He was fined $2,500 by the CSAC and received a 1 year suspension.

Phil Baroni at Strikeforce: Shamrock vs. Baroni on 7/7/07 tested positive for 2 drugs,
boldenone (for bulking up and building lean muscle mass) and stanozolol (for muscle growth and lean body look). He was fined $2,500 and had a 6 month suspension from the CSAC.

Sean Sherk at UFC 73 on 7/19/07 tested positive for nandrolone ( for recovery). His punishment was loss of his light weight UFC title, a fine of $2,500 and a 1 year suspension.
His suspension was later reduced to 6 months when he protested about the accuracy of the testing and use of dirty vials and equipment.

Hermes Franca on 7/19/07 at UFC 73 tested positive for drostanolone also known as dromostan and masteron (used during the cutting cycle to retain strength while losing mass).
Hewas suspended for 1 year and fined $2,500 by the CSAC.

Anthony Torres at UFC 75 tested positive for boldenone (for bulking up and building lean muscle mass). This was a UFC administered test. He lost his contract with UFC.

Bill Mahood at Strikeforce: Playboy Mansion on 10/5/07 tested positive for the drug
drostanolone (for for strength retention while losing body mass). His punishment was a fine of $2,500 and a 1 year suspension by the CSAC.

Adam Smith on 10/17/07 was found positive for nandrolone (for recovery) and stanozolol (for muscle growth and lean body look). He also tested positive for cocaine and marijuana. He was fined $4,000 and received a 21 month suspension from the CSAC.

Jason Winthers of Rebel Fighter:Unleashed Fury on 11/19/07 tested positive for
stanzolone( for muscle growth and lean body look) and trenbolone (for building muscle)
and also methadone and morphine. H was suspended 21 months and fined $4,000 by
the CSAC.

Ruben Villareal of WCO Kerr vs. Gavin on 11/28/07 tested positive for a drug called
4-hydroxytestosterone ( for building muscle mass). He was suspended 1 year and fined
$2,500 by the CSAC.

Dennis Hallman on 11/29/07 at Strikeforce: Four Men Enter One Survives tested
positive for drostanolone (for strength retention while losing body mass) and nandrolone
(for speeding recovery). He was fined $2,500 and suspended for 1 yea by the CSAC.

Alexander Crispim of Strikeforce: Four Men Enter One Survives on 11/29/07 tested
positive for desoxymethyltestosterone (causes increase in strength and aggression). He was
fined $2,500 and suspended for 1 year by the CSAC.

Unfortunately even the women fall victim to the allure of the steroid. Carina Damm of Femme Fatale Fighting 4 on 5/15/08 tested positive for nandrolone ( for speedy recovery). She
was suspended by the CSAC for 1 year and fined $2,500.

Alexander Noguiera of WEC34 on 7/7/08 tested positive for boldenone (for bulking and building lean muscle mass). The CSAC fined him $2,500 and gave him a 1 year suspension.

Antonio Silva on 8/21/08 of Elite XC: Unfinished Business tested positive for the drug
boldenone (for bulking up and building lean muscle). He was fined $2,500 and received a one year suspension from the CSAC. According to his representative he may have had a false reading on a test. He suffers from acromegaly, otherwise known as giantism. This disease is a disorder of the pituitary gland of the brain. It is characterized by elongated facial bones and jaw and elongated limbs. Positive testing may have occurred because of his taking another prescription drug known as Novadex.

Edwin Dewees of Affliction: Banned on 8/21/08 tested positive for nandrolone (for
recovery). He was fined $2,500 and given a 1 year suspension by the CSAC.

Chris Leben of UFC 89 on 11/3/08 tested positive for stanozolol (for muscle growth and lean body look). His punishment was loss of 1/3 of his fight purse and a 9 month suspension.

Kirill Sidelnikov on 3/3/09 at Affliction: Day Of Recovery tested positive for stanzolol
(for muscle growth and lean body look). He was fined $2,500 and suspended 1 year by CSAC.

Ken Shamrock fighting for War Gods Valentines Eve Massacre on 3/11/09 tested
positive for 3 drugs; 19-norandrosterone and 19-noretiochololone( for muscle growth and recovery) and stanozolol (for muscle growth and lean body look). He was fined $2,500 and
suspended for 1 year by the CSAC. His brother Frank Shamrock has stated that Ken has used steroids "his whole life.."

Cole Province on 8/17/09 at WEC 42 tested positive for methasterone (for building muscle mass). The NSAC fined him $4,000 and suspended him for 9 months.

Because of the reality that MMA fighters fight hard and train hard and DO get HURT
in their profession, temptation of anabolic steroids is always there. The properties of speeding recovery, increasing strength or mass or lean muscle can be desirable (especially when fighting at catch weight bouts ). However, let us not forget that many of these drugs were originally for use with horses and dispensed by veterinary doctors. Arnold Schwarzenegger probably used some of the earlier drugs. Now he has heart disease. Many fighters use HGH or human growth hormone as it is undetectable. It allows for fast recover and increasing muscle mass. Some drugs can be masked at testing. Steroids are a definite problem in the MMA as with all the professional sports. There will always be that drive to be better, bigger, stronger.

I am by profession a Registered Nurse who happens to love MMA. I have good friends who fight in the UFC. I am very well versed in the effects of these drugs on the body and mind.

Hopefully I have given you some insight on what is happening inside the MMA. Next time you watch one of the events and the camera man show the crowd, perhaps you will think to yourself,"I wonder if THEY are on steroids?" It is usually a pretty wild crowd.

Dana White Seeks "Silent Partner"

Has the well known UFC President Danna White got his "charge card" over the limit?? White stated in a personal interview with Bloomberg that the UFC may be seeking a silent partner. To be more specific."...someone who has a lot of cash and who is willing to just sit around and not tell us what to do..."

At the present time UFC is estimated to be worth anywhere from 300 million to one billion dollars. It's target audience is males age 18-48. Surprisingly more and more women are becoming fans. Perhaps one of them would want to sit back and just watch. There are 35-40% women now who eat, sleep, and breathe MMA.

It was disclosed in the interview with Bloomberg that Dana White owns 10% of the business while the Fertitta family owns a whopping 90%. They are seeking to sell shares in approximately 10-15% of the business.

After some recent filming misjudgements in the reality TV series The Ultimate Fighter there may be a loss of popularity. It is quite possible it may be breaking the bank. Due to the encouraged destruction of the elaborate house where the fighters stay and the careless use of equipment in the training areas they may be in the red. Most grown men don't want to hear about sperm being placed on food or found in the shower whether it is part of life or not. I was impressed that they did not have a bunch of drunken brawls during this last segment...at least not so far.

It is also possible that the great Kimbo Slice and his fighting ability may have been over-rated. It is not known what Dana White paid this professional street fighter to be on TUF but news has leaked out that he is afforded very special treatment. His wife and family according to one of the team members were allowed to watch him (get beaten) during his fight with fighter Roy Nelson. He also had what he calls his posse and fight promoter present. He looks impressive on camera for a man of 35, but looks don't make fights. Odds are he will be fighting again. In a nutshell he's a favorite of Dana. Dana bragged that he brought in 7 million viewers. Maybe one of them wants to be a silent partner.
U.S. Male (Mail)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4grUpvn56_M

Calling all males....this really takes the cake, or should I say pie? Fur pie perhaps. Internet porn star Joanne Angel has been seen training for an MMA bout. This supposedly has been arranged by the Sirius Radio comedy station called Raw Dog. It was noted that this is not the first time on of these events has been scheduled. You might see two girls slugging it out one moment and kissing the next, or even topless beauties in the ring. Before everyone tears up the wires to see where...it is at a gym in Las Vegas called Fortunes.

I don't think the opponent has much to worry about though. As you can see from the youtube video she punches like a girl. Well best of luck to you Raw Dog. You will probably do great with stand up, but grapplin' may be another matter. Only time will tell. Just goes to show you don't have to have a lotof experience to be an MMA fight.

Fedor Choke Out Master

Fedor Emelianenko was recently described as possibly "the greatest choke out master of MMA. Viewers of a popular tv series Sports Science were treated to a showing of Fedor's

rear naked choke. He was compared to one of nature's deadly wonders, a nine ft. Albino Bermese Python. The bermese python exerts approximately 40 lbs. of pressure to its victim which it can maintain for a solid 3 hrs. Fedor with the use of a rigged up dummy measured at 500 lbs. of pressure. More than enough to render anyone unconscious. Fedor was much more gentle with his live victim, John Brenkus Sports Science host. There is reason to fear as too little oxygen can cause brain damage. The trachea (or wind pipe as it is known) can be damaged with such crushing force.
The rear naked choke hold actually cuts off the blood supply to the brain by stopping the flow of blood from the carotid artery. It is much more effective and faster than an air choke. It is quite possible to cause severe and extensive damage to the trachea. This is not something that should be tried at home folks. Intense training and monitoring is needed. It took 4 seconds to

render John Brenkus unconscious. Brain damage could occur in as little as 5 minutes.

Forrest, Do You "Got Fight"?

Will the crowds fill the arena with excitement on November 21, 2009 as Forrest Griffin steps into the ring to fight against an old nemesis Tito Ortiz? That is the question. This will be
a repeat encounter for the two gladiators. Forrest and Tito first mixed it up in UFC 59 where Tito won by split decision.
Looking at the stats:
Griffin -16 wins, 6 loses, and 0 draws. Ortiz-15 wins, 6 losses and 1 draw.
Wins: 3(T)KO's 8(T)KO's
7 Submissions 2 Submissions
6 Decisions 3 Decisions
1 Draw
Losses: 4(T)KO's 2(T)KO's
2 Decisions 2Submissions

Forrest Griffin was born 1/7/79 in Columbus, Ohio. He called Athens GA his home.
This is the dreaded tale of the tape:
GRIFFIN ORTIZ
Age: 30 Age: 34
Height: 6'3" Height: 6'2"
Weight: 205 lbs. Weight: 205 lbs.
Reach: 77.0 in. Reach: 74.0 in.
Style: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (possesses brown belt) Style: Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Muay Thai, and Boxing Submission Wrestling
Griffin fights out of Las Vegas Nevada where he trains at the Xtreme Couture Warrior
Training Center. His most famous fight was against Stephan Bonner at the cultimation of
The Ultimate Fighter reality TV series. They were both competing for a 6 figure contract with
the UFC.
He has a behavior of leaving the ring if he loses. At UFC 66 he fought against Keith
(Dean of Mean) Jardine where he lost by TKO in the first round at 4min.41 sec. He sat very visibly shaken in his corner. Joe Rogan attempted an interview with Griffin and he walked away
saying "I don't know ...Keith came in and knocked me the fuck out. Let's go home." He left Rogan standing alone in center ring.
At UFC 70 he was scheduled to fight Lyoto Machida but contracted staph infection and was unable to compete.
Griffin won in UFC 76 against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua by rear naked choke. It is reported that after that fight he suffered a shoulder injury and had to have surgery. He was
taken from the limelight while he healed.
On July 5, 2008 he obtained the Light Heavy Weight title by fighting the opposing coach
on The Ultimate Fighter Series Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. H won by unanimous decision and
was awarded Fight of the Night honors.
In his first title defense he fought against "Suga" Rashad Evans in UFC 92. Evans defeated Griffin by TKO in the third round. In this fight Griffin Broke his hand. He was again
placed on the sidelines for recovery.
When the announcement came out that Griffin was scheduled to fight in UFC 101 against
Anderson "The Spider" Silva his followers had very mixed emotions. During a pre-fight interview with MMA News he commented that he was not getting a lot of positive reactions
when he told people who he was fighting, stating that he got comments like, "ewww dude.."
I am sure that was hard on his self- esteem. It did not help when Silva stood in the center of the cage yelling and taunting Forrest. He was defeated in the third round by KO in the first round at 3 min. 23 sec. He and his corner men immediately left the cage and disappeared into the crowd a leaving Silva to stand alone in the ring as he was announced the winner. He then dropped out of sight for an undetermined time being spotted occasionally at the Xtreme Couture gym.
It's noted that he no longer sports that "boyish grin" found so appealing by his fans. He has been interviewed and has made some very bizzare statements such as, "hey man don't tell me
I am your kids Idol.." and "It's kinda hard to believe anyone likes me...cause I don't even like myself..." He recently announced he went to GA and got married. Perhaps she will help guide him. As they say behind every good man is a good woman.
Forrest Griffin is replacing injured fighter Mark Coleman in UFC 106 on Nov. 21, 2009.
I wish him good luck. Forrest does have other wins under his belt that are before his time in UFC.
